“Heal the sick, feed the hungry, care for the weakest among us, and always pray in private.” This “verse” is not from the Bible but it manages to pack several of Christ’s teachings into one compact, sincere missive.

Interesting how Fundamentalists complain about atheists being too aggressive with their atheism and then throw cartoons like this in our faces.

“suffer the little children to come unto me, do not restrict them, for verily this is the kingdom of heaven.” I like the ones that Christ spoke about caring for others and caring for the poor and the elderly and the infirm and feeding those who are hungry as being part of the responsibility of any who would follow him to find the kingdom of heaven… It’s too bad that Christianity has become so twisted that it now means that those who practice Christianity care only for themselves and judge all others as being Unworthy of the Christian image of the Kingdom of Heaven. ****A note here…… I also like the axiom that says ….all roads lead to Rome, …..that axiom can also be translated as ……all roads lead to a Higher Power .

@sljdoesnotspeakforme…you’re right. I want to spread Christian values and ethics into the public sphere—not the dogma, the actual, “love thy neighbor” ethical foundation Jesus represented. I want our government to treat everyone with respect and fairness. I want it to stand in to protect the poor and infirm. I want it to help parents educate and care for children. I want the various governments, federal, state, and local to consider fairness and justice and exhibit compassionate behaviors. I want legislators who are ethical, honest, and straight. Yup, guilty as charged. I am willing to be taxed to promote these Christian ideals.

All that other stuff, the dogmatic stuff, well, that’s just not important to me. The genuflecting nonsense. (As if the organizing forces of the universe care about humans on their knees.) The transubstantiation stuff (kind of vampiric, actually), the whole “faith not deeds” stuff (very dumb), the whole “believe in me and your sins are forgiven” stuff. (Really?) The proselytizing, the intolerance, the hypocrisy. The sense of community is an important component of religion, and it’s a wonderful thing. I wish we could bring a sense of community to being American and all work together to promote American aspirational ideals. Sadly, the regressives don’t want that. They think government is, a priori, evil. How wrong they are!!!

Nope, really only government can act on everyone’s behalf. It’s all we’ve got. It’s all that stands between us and the dark ages. An enlightened government should serve those Christian principles shown to be real and efficacious. Love, tolerance, peace, taking care of children, feeding the hungry, treating the sick, and much, much more.

What you call “Christian” values have been the values of ALL decent and progressive societies world-wide and in all eras. Indeed, the early Christians plagiarized all their values from the Stoics in Greece, chapter and verse.
