When I hear ‘toque’, I think of a woman’s velvet hat, not a knitted cap which I might call a ‘watch cap’ (thanks to my dad’s nautical military service.) But then, I’m an old lady.
The first time (late 50’s) I heard the word “Toque” or (“Toques”) was when I was a child, It was a reference to get some pot and do some “Toques” (Puffs) with it ! I never understood why tho’
