fish don’t breathe water, they extract dissolved oxygen from the water. In fact many species, including goldfish, can actually pull oxygen from air as long as their gills remain wet. When I was in high school we did an experiment involving looking at a goldfish’s tail under a microscope and all it took was a wet piece of cotton on its head to keep it alive.
