Dondi did go out of one’s mind, didn’t he? I barely remember that strip, and am not sure I want to google it.

Wow, the example strip over on Wikipedia really is dark: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Dondihasen41562.jpg My favorite bit is the narrator at the start: “To get Dondi’s mind off his sorrows Ted takes the youngster fishing.” Halfway through the Sunday-length strip Dondi’s speaks wistfully, “Joe sure would’ve enjoyed being here with us,” to which dad replies a bit sharply, “I thought we agreed to be brave and not speak of him.” That’s parenting, 50s style! Go pointless stoicism!

The sole premise for Dondi was pretty depressing. Makes my life seem downright festive.

Okay, this got me going on old comic strips and, one thing leading to another, got me buying a compilation of strips of Gordo on eBay. Thanks!

And thinking of ‘old comic strips’ led to memories of ‘The Adventures of Tintin.’ I truly hope that the movies Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson are making would be worthy of Herge’s approval.

One of the most depressing strips in the paper is “Nancy”; the depressing part is that it’s still running.
