The political and media elites are framing the Democrats’ loss as a reaction to policies and initiatives Obama implemented.
Actually, the key is what he and the Democrats didn’t do. The enthusiasm gap meant that a large part of the base that looked to them for change stayed home. The Democrats spent all their time sidling up to big money and compromising with the right wing.
It’s simple: no change, no vote.
From Raw Story:
Around one million fewer Americans under the age of 30 cast ballots in the 2010 mid-term elections compared to the 2006 vote, a study from the Center for Information and Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE) found. An estimated nine million people aged between 18 and 29, or one in five young Americans, voted Tuesday.
Young people are considered a key Democratic Party voter bloc, and their vote was instrumental in getting President Barack Obama elected two years ago, when a record 23 million under-30s cast ballots in the presidential polls.
The problem with that is now we have worse people who will make worse changes and who will now do all the redistricting in order to make sure that their dystopian future becomes permanent.
Just because the change didn’t happen as fast or as perfectly as we wanted doesn’t mean we roll over and say, “Oh well, you blew it - let’s give up and let the bad guys take over.”
The cartoon over-reaches. Rall hasn’t made clear what he is saying. In addition, he oversteps his drawing ability in trying to draw David Axelrod. His caricature of President Obama is already pretty weak.
Right. Obama ignored the simple things that would have big impact while caving on the harder things that would have changed the game altogether.
Obama promised things that he did not (refuses to) deliver on.
The GOP claims 2/3 of the country doesn’t like Obama.
True- 1/3 of that is racists who hate Obama because he’s black, the other 1/3 are those of us who feel he didn’t do the stuff the liberal/progressive stuff he promised.
Reagan undid much of the forward-thinking stuff that Carter initiated. For example, he took down the solar panels on the White House that Carter put up. Carter reduced foreign oil consumption by 50%, and Reagan reversed that.
And despite what politicians, political analysts and pundits have been saying for weeks, if not months, most of the voters themselves claimed that the election was not a referendum on the president. A minority of the voters — 37 percent — said that expressing opposition to Mr. Obama was a factor in their vote, but an equal number said that the president was not a factor in their votes at all. Nearly a quarter said they voted the way they did in part to express support for the president.

Again, the election results are simply the result of White Wing Rightie Noise from Faux News and Talk Radio. The only mistake Obama has made is that he was too willing to compromise with fools like the GOP. We on the left are on the right side of history and now is the time to make sure we don’t let the GOP undo what we have already accomplished since 2007!
Things probably will improve in Congress over the next two years now. For the last two years the Republicans have gridlocked Congress and intentionally sabotaged any attempts to improve the economy, just so Obama and the Democrats would look bad in this past midterm election. Now that they’ve recaptured the House, the Republicans will start letting legislation pass, then try and grab the credit for improving the economy.
Thanks, Jade, for providing substance that counters some of the conventional wisdom.
Fox would have to suspend its entire network, since Murdoch gave one million dollars to the Republican Party.
Clay, the economy is already improving. I expect two years of stalemate while the economy slowly improves, because of what President Obama & the democrats did in 2009 & 2010, and then, the Republicans will try to take the credit in 2012. They still must find a candidate who can beat Obama, though.
Merm, due to the spinelessness of both parties in the Senate, much good legislation passed by the House died in the Senate. In the next two years, because of the split in the Senate, much bad legislation passed by the House will die in the Senate.
As for the Tea Party agenda, this is the mentality that brought us HUAC. I’ve spent my whole life – six decades plus – watching as we slowly, painfully tried to climb out of and distance ourselves from those times and values. I feel like Sisyphus pushing his giant boulder uphill, only to have it escape his grip and crash back down every time the summit is finally within reach.
Nothing much will change over the next 2 years. The Democrats will become the Party Of No!, gridlock will continue and the rich and powerful will continue to get wealthier and more powerful while the rest of the country goes down the tubes. If you’re on the left, you really should check out the Green Party. We need to break the stranglehold the 2 branches of the Money Party have on government in this country. If you’re on the right, you should move to China or Saudi Arabia or someplace like that where they have systems to your liking.
sirromsirrom, the Tea Party agenda is mostly focused on reducing gigantic government spending. What that has to do with the HUAC escapes me.
And by the way, there actually were several communist agents in the federal bureaucracy at the time. Alger Hiss, for instance, actually was a GRU agent, and the Rosenbergs really were Soviet spies. Perhaps your pushing against the wrong boulder.

Hawkins easily won the big debate – and no one noticed. All the media could talk about was “The Rent Is Too Damm High!” Howie converted me, though.
