How did a dumb guy such as Brewster get promoted to captan? (I know, it’s only a comic strip, but in the fiction of the comic strip, why is Brewster a captan?)
The captain being able to perform a marriage ceremony is Not a total myth. In the 15th and 16th century a ships captain had the full authority of the King or Sovereignty of their nation. They could perform a marriage, or an execution for a crime. However in today’s world not so much. A US or UK captain can’t perform a marriage. But a Japanese caption can, as well as several other nations. Now for the fun part when you return to port in the US the marriage may not be valid.
