In my nearly 27 years of working in corrections I think I identified the definitions of stool pigeons and dirty rat. A stool pigeon has witnessed a crime and tells what he/she knows. It should be noted that they don’t have to be a criminal to fall under this definition. Snitch and stool pigeon are interchangeable. A dirty rat is someone who participated in the crime and tells about the inner workings of what went down for a lesser sentence or immunity.
