Here’s where I put in a plug for the excellent new book Fantasyland, by Kurt Andersen, which explains that fakery, illusion, and reality denial have been a constant presence in America since the time of the Puritans. Usually, tho, they were hiding in the shadows, scorned in public. Now, however, they’re looming large.
At least The Daily Show, The Onion, The Colbert Report, and National Lampoon admitted up front that they were fake news, and nobody ever took The National Enquirer’s hyperbolic ravings and conspiracy theories seriously.

Trump may be a faker, but he is really dangerous in what he will do to maintain himself.
