Ah, the days when we wore slips! I always had a half-slip under my skirt and yep…usually it would peek out. Geez….haven’t worn one of these in about 50 years.
I never understood the purpose of the slip, only the finest of fabric like silk was so see through that a barrier of opaqueness would be necessary. Perhaps with heavier woolen skirts/dresses a shield against rough fabric might be wanted. But for the most part the layers of under armor of the time period were absurd. All nine of my cousins were older and female, one could not help but to learn from conversation and laundry basket the various layers of underpinnings necessary for a ‘young lady’ to be “properly” dressed before leaving the house for social or business engagements. Add to that the fact the slip was the final piece of the ‘unmentionables’ layer before the blouse/skirt or dress went on and there might be five to six layers of the onion to peel away before the actual girl was revealed.
1- Hey! You finally got some new skirts. Why are you wearing both of them? 2- Where’s your usual plaid skirt and why are you wearing two? 3- Two skirts? You’re dumb. 4- Bunch of backward, provincial follow-the-crowd zombies. Don’t know a fashion trend when they see it. 5- Maybe this will clear things up for them…

I quit wearing slips when overseas in Spain – it was just too darn hot to add another layer. I no longer own any.
