I’m not sure I get it. Why does he have to call the people applying for his job? Is he fired?
It is an old trope that he can call the people who want his job or do it himself. The boss doesn’t care.
Typical of some companies laying of workers who have been there a long time just to be immediately replaced with new workers they can hire at a lower pay rate.
