The repubs did NOT promise to fix it. They did everything to sabotage it. The Rump promised to repeal then replace it. The mess they created has nothing to do with the democrats.
Obamacare was designed to fail so they could push for Single Payer.
We need MORE choice over what insurance coverage we buy, not less. LESS regulation not more. Tort reform. Ability to buy across state lines. People need to pay for the basic doctor’s visit out of pocket instead of expecting everything being covered by someone else.
@BWR: Have you looked at what a basic Dr. visit costs nowadays? Fifty or sixty dollars for being in the office for fifteen minutes (and half of that time waiting between when the nurse leaves after taking vitals and actually SEEING the Doctor) is one thing. Two hundred and fifty dollars is another.
I saw a report yesterday that the insurance companies are profitable and profits are continuing to improve. Not so much for the people paying the premiums.
I left The Evil Insurance Company in 1983 and I know things have changed. We had an “excess” in our reserve account, and the State made us return it to the subscribers. The excess was about $3million, and people thought they were going to take a trip to Europe on the refund. We had just over 2 million subscribers. Do the math.
Trump promised he’d have a healthcare plan that provided much better coverage than Obamacare for a lot less money. Maybe it’s time to entertain the thought that he either had no clue what he was talking about, or that he’s just another politician making promises he knew he couldn’t keep. Or, both.
No one ever seems to mention that the middle class who could afford the unsubsidized premiums are paying for the other 85% on the ACA. I can’t speak for others but everybody I have run into that likes it is getting a reduced premium at the expense of someone else. We need single payer which in itself would be very hard to institute due to the US being a for profit health system. Until greed, profit and stock dividends get out of the picture its always going to be a mess. Highest costs for healthcare in the world and ranked 28th for our standard of care.
When Healthcare is a “for-profit semi- Monopoly”; insurance companies are going to raise the premiums as high as they can go. Give us the same Insurance Converse gets. Face it, the greedy money-grubbing insurance companies are out for what they can get. And a republican-controlled congress is going to let them.
There are various ways to provide health insurance for everyone. One way keeps private insurance companies in the system, but mandates that everyone has to buy a policy, regulates the policies, and subsidizes those who can’t afford the premiums. Several countries in Europe have something like this system, and it seems to work for them. (It seems a little complicated to me, but it it works, hey, it works.) Another way takes private insurance companies out of the system (though they can write other kinds of insurance), covers everyone automatically, and the system is paid for through taxes. That’s single payer, as in Canada and the UK, and it seems to work pretty well. I actually think that the single payer system fits US law and custom best. It’s not clear that the US government can mandate purchase of insurance, and even if the mandate is legal, it rubs some people the wrong way. But single payer doesn’t have a mandate. You don’t buy insurance, you just get it. In the same way that you don’t buy police protection, you just get it. Or road construction. And so on. As for the payment, the government clearly has the power to levy taxes. (Now this is only part of the problem; there’s also the cost of health care, and that can be reduced as well, but that’s a different discussion.)
There has never been a major project or program installed that didn’t need some things to be fixed later – there are ALWAYS unforeseen circumstances. But the Republicans found it easier to keep bleating about “repeal” and their sheep listened. It is so easy to say something is wrong. But when it comes to fixing the issues, it is more complicated than Trump or Repubs believed because they never gave it much thought.

There’s a difference between a program that needs improvement and one that is being sabotaged.
