Outhouses were interesting. You could watch the waste beneath you roil with the maggots/larvae, knowing after they reached adult stage, they would land on your mouth and your food.
(Indoor plumbing saved more lives yearly than curing AIDS would. It is much easier to get a fly to infect you than getting an infected human to.)

Possibly restrooms are clean and civilized, or primitive and filthy because they reflect the characteristics of those using them.
