He made a comment about Serena Williams being the best female tennis player ever. The interviewer asked if the qualification was needed. He asked for clarification and the interviewer specifically asked if she could be considered the best tennis player ever, period. McEnroe answered no. In a bit of hyperbole, he stated that if she were playing on the men’s tour, she’d be ranked around 700. He placed himself around 1200. People have since taken that comment as some misogynistic attack against Serena. Those same people ignore the fact that he was answering the question asked of him. They also ignore that Serena herself has stated that she wouldn’t be competitive on the men’s tour, that the game is totally different, that the men are much stronger and faster than the competition she faces. They also ignore that Serena, back in her mid-20’s peak, was boasting about her prowess after one of the majors and ending up playing a match against a guy ranked 235th in the world at the time – and got totally demolished. When you take all of that into consideration, you realize that this whole brouhaha is much ado about nothing. While the 700 number might be a bit of hyperbole, the point stands. Serena, while being the best female tennis player ever, shouldn’t be compared to the best men’s tennis players ever.
