Been going on for a long time, standard practice for “no-shows”, but now that monopolization of routes between the few remaining airlines has also reduced the number of planes and crews they put out there, it keeps getting worse as they seek to pack every plane, to “save” fuel.
If you were going to avail yourself to this, you would have to sell your three cartoons to the newspaper. Once they had them in hand and ready to print, you would have to suddenly need one of them back. The reason why you need that cartoon back is because getting that cartoon back will help you come up with maybe 8 or 12 fresh new cartoons. Just imagine how much money you could make from that, or lose if you didn’t have that cartoon back. The newspaper already purchased the cartoons, but because you created them and now REALLY (and lets make this clear you have to REALLY need them back) need them, you can get some goons, physically hold that guy down and rip the cartoon from his hand. You won’t get paid for 4 toons up front for creating 3, but you will certainly make a lot more with the inspiration of that one you did get back, and those 8 – 12 extra toons are worth a lot more in the long run. Even if some whiny newspaper baby had to get hurt in the process.
The flight was NOT overbooked. United decided, after everyone was on board, that they wanted to send a flight crew along, couldn’t get anybody to volunteer to stay behind, and couldn’t be bothered trying to book their crew on another airline.
