I used to be like that in high school. I learned that if you are always polite and never insult anyone, then refusing to say anything nice about someone has more impact on people’s opinion of that person than any amount of insults. And insulting someone might just only reflect badly on me.
After you graduate from school, cliques shrink in importance, circles of people you know grow and the overlapping of circles shrink so it has far less impact.
