I don’t know if it is still true, but back in the 90’s if your earnings came 100% from overseas and you were not in America for a certain number of days (and they excluded the days you might spend travelling between countries on the ocean) you owed no taxes to the US government. Unfortunately for us, my husband was 1 day short of the required number of days….
