Thank you for remembering the White Sox – ESPN didn’t

Well the Cubs fans didn’t forget – they’ve all called up the White Sox fans they know to ask “how long has it been since your team won the World Series?”

Now my BaseBall Bucket List is complete.

Both my Red Sox and my Cubs have done something I thought I’d never see in my lifetime – win a World Series !.

All those years of high hopes in Springtime and crushing disappointments in Fall are over ! Actually, sometimes, especially with the Cubbies, the disappointment began in early July.

I learned from early youth in Northern Illinois that you can’t be both a Cubs and White Sox fan.

Since then, I have followed the Cubs’ fortunes from a distance, so Chicago championships in other sports have never meant anything to me. ,

Growing up in Connecticut, I had five teams to select from because we sat between two major sports markets – Boston and New York. In Boston we had the Braves and the Red Sox and New York had the Dodgers, Giants and Yankees.

My grandfather swore that if you were a working man and a Democrat, you rooted for the Red Sox and the Dodgers but if you were rich and Republican, you were a Yankee and either a Braves or a Giants fan.

I’m not really sure that was even close to the truth. My schoolmates were pretty much evenly divided between the Yankees and the Red Sox and knew every player on both teams and their batting averages or pitching averages by heart. Ditto for the Brooklyn “Bums” and the Giants before they were uprooted to the other coast.

I never really followed the Boston Braves, except to follow the exploits of Eddie Mathews.

Get ready for the ASTROS to win soon. Maybe 2116!
