I do have to say something here, having cashier experience myself. It’s not always that the cashier doesn’t know or is stupid. When you get used to a machine doing it for you, you go into a different mode. Suddenly the machine messes up or you do and you have to switch the brain on. Sometimes it’s performance anxiety or even just being extremely tired. I can answer questions and do math easily if nobody is right there watching me. If someone is standing there, it makes me nervous and my brain freezes up. Also, when you’ve had a long shift or it’s been a crazy busy day and suddenly this happens, your brain is tired. Doesn’t want to work quickly. Maybe even the cashier has a life outside of work. (shocker, they are human beings! Crazy, huh?) Maybe they had something bad happen to them personally and had to go to work. They are going through the routine and suddenly this happens. It is SOOOO easy to be on the other side, have no clue what what is going on with that person, and act like they are an idiot and you are some kind of God.

What would happen if he tried paying with a check?

Buy a car with cash sometime! That’ll start the wheels turning…

It will if the car costs over $10,000. Any transaction ≥ that sets off paranoids.

I am aware of car prices. My first car (a ’57 Beetle) is the last one I ever saw below that new, and that was back when minimum wage was 75¢ per hour.

It shows my age that my first thought was that she had just told him to steal whatever he was trying to buy.

I’m still in the old habit of handing the cashier my card. They sometimes get annoyed and shove the square reader towards me.
