“ There are those who will immediately chime in with the survival of the fittest (usually without understanding what fitness is) as a justification for unrestrained competition, but in fact the reality of human success as a species has been its ability to cooperate and to care for all members of the group, and its ability to recognize a large group. To digress a bit, the failure of modern capitalism is mostly as failure of recognition of the function of investment to benefit the society as a whole instead of the casino game it now is with the winner take all mentality, that is the result of financialization of the markets. “ .With Lyft, Uber, and Otto there will be displacements of drivers as AI (self-driving) vehicles become more profitable. Optimistically, the displaced will find better employment. We are feeding more people than we expected that we could based on 30 year old predictions. If the same thing happens with renewable energy we may be able to create new employment opportunities as the old fossil based energy sources become to impractical and too expensive to utilize. I would love to see competitive capitalism replace our entrenched oligopolies. Other nations have produced greater literacy for less expense, experiencing lower crime rates. Our illiterate become gang members and criminals very easily. Our prisons, in moving to private, for profit, institutions do not rehabilitate … they want repeat business. Inmates are the largest group of illiterates in society and they leave person being a liability and a tax burden. The short term thinking just perpetuates a problem and does nothing to halt the epidemic. We have great social needs and are afflicted with bitter polarization with a political system that seems to feed that polarization and it preventing the progress we desperately need at the social level.. America has always been the mongrel that outperformed the monolithic cultures. America has stumbled but has always eventually come up with solutions that the rest of the world envies, that is, whenever we work together. I hope we both live long enough to see an end to the stagnation.

Specific to the real-world of horse racing, many folks have long said America should follow Britain’s example and not allow a horse to race until 5 years old and physically mature and with a stable bone structure, especially in the legs. Running two-year olds and the Derby at 3 is what’s killing ’em.

My folks had Thorobreds when I was a kid and though the powers that be didn’t support her, our trainer also didn’t run horses too early and wanted change, that was in the early 1950’s!

The profit margin issue, regardless the cost of previous failures, does kinda’ sum up Trump though.
