Cruz’s proposal, which his campaign staff says will become an “official” part of his platform over the next several days, would require all Americans to visit “a church or other religious property” at least once each month, unless they meet certain exemption standards, which have not been formally announced yet. Failure to comply would result in a fine, and going several months without a church visit could even result in a single night of jail time.
“People think that Senator Sylvia Allen is crazy, but what’s so crazy about Americans of all stripes reaffirming their faith in God?” Cruz asked during a brunch with a few hundred donors on Friday. “It wasn’t all that long ago that going to Church was a very American thing to do. Belief in a power higher and greater than yourself inspired this nation to do great things. To achieve goals that people without faith could never dream of. If I’m elected as your next president, my administration will help us reclaim that lost moral high ground.
