As a current “far away” grandparent, it is very hard to make that bond feel real without it being based solely on money or presents, but that’s about our only choice.

And as a child of divorced parents (and very early on), those several weeks a year spent in the other side of the family’s town always meant a lot; especially with our “other” grandparents.

Sent my two oldest boys every summer to Arizona, unti, my mother-in-law moved to California to be able to spend Christmas around them. One time only after that she had a hard time being a full-time grandmother.

I don’t remember how old Nicholas is, but my son started flying alone when he was 9 — because his father and I lived 1000 miles apart. The airlines don’t ever let them out of their sight, even during plane changes.

My brother went from Garrett, IN to Saskatoon Saskatchewan Canada by train when he was 16 and had to switch trains in Chicago and WInnipeg. No problem.

“My dad says they miss not having their grandchildren around.”This is a common blunder in spoken English. What should be said is the opposite: “My dad says they miss having their grandchildren around.”
