This is weirder than the “Calvin and Hobbes” storyline where the heroes play with a ouija board.

That is not the reaction Jason usually gets from Paige.

When this strip originally ran, there were some four or five strips that had the exact same—EXACT SAME—setup with different punch lines. Pearls Before Swine and Get Fuzzy, and I think one or two others.

Now the best thing for her to do is throw that board in the dumpster where it belongs. These things were sold as “family games” years ago. We used to have one, though we rarely pulled it out, thankfully. They were used to access the occult (maybe still are), and never should have been sold as toys or games.

I used to have one when I was little. Never figured out how to make it work.

There’s no such thing as “spirits” or “magick”. People who play with spirit boards are getting “messages” from their own subconscious minds, the same place dreams come from. Or they’re getting tricked by charlatans when it’s done in groups. One charismatic individual can convince an entire group of people to relax (similar to a form a hypnosis) and then physically guide the pointer without the others’ consciously feeling it. This kind of nonsense has been going on since the 19th century, and it’s especially pernicious when the phony “psychic” or “medium” dupes people into paying good money for it.

I watched an episode of “Brain Games” in which folks playing with a Ouija board were blindfolded. Guess what. Everything that was spelled out was complete gibberish. That makes the game a harmless pastime, right? A few days ago I was telling this to a friend who told me about how, when she was young, she walked past her sister’s room and the sister was laying on her bed asking questions of the board. She wasn’t touching the board at all, it was on the floor next to the bed. The “planchette” was moving all by itself and ANSWERING HER QUESTIONS. I’ll stick to my resolve not to play with such things.

No one should mess with a ouija board. If you don’t believe, why bother? If you do, why be crazy enough to open the door to let absolutely anything in?

And the proper way to get rid of one is to burn it.

Whether you believe or not, it’s not something to mess with. Let the dead lie, and mourn them in your own ways.

Gotta be careful with ouija boards, they can cause trouble, and contact the wrong kind of spirits.

I’m sorry! Is this a reality comic? Like a reality show? Do we see examples of behavior that exemplify human relations? Is this a bully that has inflicted violence on his sister, or just a exceptional nerd that is laughable because he is so cute in his glasses? I think it is bullying violence.

There was a good friend of mine who died of carbion monoxide poisoning while working on his car. It became the talk of the town because a lazy slob of a doctor simply said it was a suicide and wrote that on his death certificate. (It was later overturned on appeal; his death ultimately ruled accidental). Point being, his friends said they were contacted by his spirit when playing Ouija in the words “ACCIDENT. I WOULD NEVER ABANDOM MY WIFE AND KIDS”

Does Paige think that the Spirits kicked her? She hasn’t yet retaliated.
