Caufield is the classic example of an exaggeration character.
Similar to Jason Fox knowing calculus at age 10, the BC cavemen understanding modern issues, and Garfield eating 2 tons of lasagna in one sitting, these characters have a trait amplified far past what is possible, in order to present a humorous view of the world. Caufield has the knowledge and wit of an older adult, and he uses his wit to show just what it is to be a kid in an adult’s world.
