I was salaried and cam in early every day and left late because there was so much I needed to get done. The only real time benefit I had was that I could leave for doctor appointments or take a longer lunch without penalty. The boss knew that I would be sure to get the day’s work done.
OK, this is a worst-case example of “consider the source.” Burl is an oblivious idiot, as the expression on the teacher’s face makes clear. So just to spell it out because I’ve met HR professionals, payroll people and business owners who don’t understand the whole exempt/non-exempt thing: being exempt from overtime pay rules DOES NOT have ANYTHING to do with whether you can collect unemployment. Even in “at-will” states, if you are fired for cause you DO NOT GET TO COLLECT unemployment just because you were exempt.

Just try getting unemployment if you’re fired for cause.

Burl is an excellent example of the kind of employee who ruins the work environment for everyone else.
