SPIES?!?!?!?! THE HORROR! Do you think they’ll find out that we watch more reality TV than we participate in running our country?! Gotta keep that secret. You don’t suppose they found out we’re bad at saving money do you? Or that we’re so politically polarized we’re practically our own enemy. We MUST stop them or ALL IS LOST!

church – one of these days I will explain what I really believe, and then you will have to remove the dispensation. (I think you probably have some suspicions already.)

I don’t see how any government can properly provide national security without “spies”… Our forefathers used them in the Revolutionary War… God told Joshua to send spies into Canaan to do ReCon.

Rahab was a volunteer “spy” for the Jews in Jericho, and won a place in the lineage of Jesus for her choice to help God’s People.

Gathering “intel” is a necessity for nations who have enemies….I hope we have “spies” inside the Global Jihad planning centers…

church – that’s not quite the way I remember it.

As I recall, you had made a general comment about lefties and Obamalatry. I replied that I, for one, don’t worship Obama. You replied, in turn, okay, so you are sane and moderate (unlike the other lefties), do I have to include a note to that effect on every post? (Thus it was your suggestion, not my request.) I replied that I would appreciate that. (Thanking someone is not quite the same as requesting.) And then I very helpfully proposed the wording which you have very kindly used.

But to be slightly more serious. I note here and there – from both the left and the right – an occasional tendency to lump all lefties or all righties together as if they all thought the same way. I try not to make that kind of generalization. I certainly know that the lefties don’t all agree – it’s one of the curses of the left that we are always split – and I believe from reading these posts that the righties don’t all agree. I would never assume, for example, the you, Church, necessarily agree with all the positions put forward by those one could reasonably characterize as righties. Am I correct?

Lonecat, you are correct. Lumping may lead to inaccurate conclusions.

In general I find I tend to agree very frequently with Churchill. So often if he/she writes something with which i agree i add no further comment.

I use the term communitarian which i think you called statist.

Church, if you haven’t already suggest you read a blog called the Volokh Conspiracy. My favorite.

Even though I think of myself as left/progressive, I am not fond of big government. In general I want the government to butt out of my life. But I am even less fond of big corporations, which I see as a bigger threat to individual liberty. (And I don’t like big religion, either.) I think that government has a role to play, partly to keep big corporations under some kind of control, and partly to protect the common interests – such as maintaining a livable environment. I am much happier with a thriving system of smaller businesses, including small farms, but I suppose there’s no way to get rid of big corporations at this point. But they should not be allowed to do whatever they want. I don’t mind if some people get rich, but I do mind it that the current global economic system allows a lot of people to be very poor.

Where does that put me on your chart?

liberal, but right on the edge of libertarian. But I don’t like many of the questions – they are not very well formulated. I think we could get together and make a better survey.
