They actually can’t dictate anything. The sane Republicans have a whole Democratic party to work with. Together, they could get the HorR and the whole country back to work. They just have to get used to the idea that the Democrats demand less from them than the right wing loonies in their own party.
Speaking from the left, I find a lot of value in the idea that “traditional social values and institutions…reflect the accumulated wisdom of many generations. They are to be altered slowly and with care.” But there are situations that should not continue, even though they are traditional. Slavery was an example. No matter how traditional it way, it was bad, and it had to be abolished. I grew up in the Southern US, where segregation was a tradition. That also had to be abolished. There was a time when women couldn’t vote. That had to be changed. The problem with Burke’s position is that it can often be used, or misused, by those who simply want to preserve a system of privilege.
“We all deal with ambiguous situations all the time in our daily lives, you fool.”Fool, that I am. I still believe in the superposition of ideologies to create a sum that is greater than its parts … not excluding any productive ideas. Burke’s philosophy is fine as long it does not impede change that is urgently needed.

I think there were 20 or more, perhaps not really a small group.
