The electronics is already packed .. a couple of days ago. Those baggage fees will cost more than their entire vacation.

Upcoming developments: they board the plane, paying (as Aaron said) more in baggage fees than they paid for the tickets. Somewhere over the Pacific, one of Irving’s electronic gadgets will accidentally activate, causing the plane to crash on a deserted island. The survivors will have to live on soup made by boiling Cathy’s shoes untiil rescue teams arrive two weeks later. Somehow, Cathy will not lose any weight during the ordeal.

The three little words should be “no more electronics”.

Actually it sounds like a Lost rerun… :-)

Does any NORMAL woman really have that many pairs of shoes?? I love a cute pair of shoes as much as anyone, but I have TWO pairs of sandals - one flat for casual wear and one with a low heel for when I’m being more dressy. What say the rest of the ladies here?

I think most ladies feel that many of their shoes “don’t count.” So I wouldn’t ask the ladies to count their shoes!

In my house there are three or four pairs of ladies’ shoes that get worn regularly, and three or four others that get worn for occasions when they’re particularly well suited. Add a few pairs of boots, flipflops, “water shoes” and other stuff I haven’t ever really figured out how to identify, and I’d say a dozen can be useful.

But in my house there are 1-2 dozen more that have slept deep in closets, lain far beneath beds or bureaus, or hidden in far recesses somewhere for a decade or two, and 1-2 dozen more that fill shoe racks, shoeboxes or shelves in the hope that some day they may fit again, come back into style, or suit the fancy of a younger relative (fat chance).

Yet my house seems pretty normal to me. So my answer to how many pairs of shoes a NORMAL woman has is: 50 pairs. (Sorry, but numbers do tend to add up; it’s a fact.)

Rebuttal from the distaff side? Input from Guys? I’m open.

I have lots of foot problems. Highest on my priority list is shoes that don’t hurt when I walk; otherwise, they’re unwearable, so why buy them. What do my shoes look like? Don’t ask.

Friends have advised me to get shoes with orthopedic - what’s the word? - ‘inserts’? I plan to do this some time when I want to force myself not to eat for a few weeks - I don’t have a lot of disposable income (or any other kind). (Altho people from Nigeria keep sending me emails about millions of dollars they claim to owe me, but which I don’t remember.)

So every once in a while I spend a fair amount of money on shoes that fit, and then just don’t buy shoes at all for the next few years.

The last time I bought shoes was about eight years ago. I spent $600 on four pairs - two pairs of sandals and two pairs of lace-ups.

So, up till now, that’s 4 pair * 8 years = 32 pair-years. $600/32 = $20 (very roughly). So each pair of shoes has cost me about $20 per year, and will cost less each year in the future, sort of like depreciation on a car. I think that’s not an unreasonable expense.

I’d like to have some special running or walking shoes, but I don’t know what to look for. And I had plastic sandals for swimming, but the cost is trivial.

A friend of mine was quite shocked at this expenditure, and I tried to explain that this was an investment for the future. I had worn my previous shoes till they fell apart. I would love to have some pretty shoes - nice-looking shoes - (sigh) but…

I do hope other people (male or female) aren’t in the same fix.

Where are you guys buying these shoes that last for that many years??? I’ve probably accumulated about 100 pairs of shoes in the past 8 years…and while I don’t wear nearly all of them I wear a fair amount. The ones that get the most wear are usually worn out in a couple of years.
