    Maybe the minerals were found first before they entered.

    This is a much more conventional cartooning approach than the last one. As comYics implied, the studies on the minerals were done some time in the past, and the timing of the “news” seems somewhat suspect to me. I wish Ted had gone beyond the obvious surface conclusion that many other cartoonists might have drawn, into a more insidious conspiratorial motivation: Americans now have a reason to feel better about the enterprise and think there’s a tangible reason for us to be there. Is this really a game-changer, or just another Pandora’s box of new complications?

    Whenever the minerals were actually confirmed to be there (the story in the NY Times makes it seem possible they’ve been known about for a while if you read between the lines) they will surely be a reason to attract American investment and thus more and more attention from our global overseas corporate security guards aka the US military.

    @Radish

    I realize you both are being cynical, but

    While accounting for matters “on the ground”, its 2011, so the president can be held accountable for lack of progress in Afghanistan during the 2012 campaign cycle. Which I think starts November 3rd 2010.

    And I’ll use that to point out you are pointing out all the things America had screwed up 1-20- 2001 through 1-20-09.

    If only we’d paid attention to the little things like AF/Pak in 2003, and the rule of law keeping torture out of the public tool box of interrogation…

    I’ll have the bacon double cheeseburger with cottage fries, but make it a diet coke, I’m on a diet. Anyone want an appetizer?

    Another war, another Friedman Unit, based, yet again, on yet more expedient, after-the fact reasons.

    The Americans aren’t even pretending any more. They just make up whatever bleeep they want and run with it. It is no longer the rule of law, it’s the rule of the gun. Is it any wonder Iran is trying to build nuclear weapons.

    The United States has now become the Evil Empire. Ronnie Raygun would be so proud!

    Seriously, does anyone honestly still believe that this is going to end well - or at all?

    The Pentagon has plans in place for a “Long War” of 50 -70 years duration.
