Min wage hike isn’t working very well in Seattle. Face it, some jobs just aren’t worth $15/hour.
Australia has minimum wage of AUD$26.50 and they have a pretty high cost of living, as well as OMG taxes.
Other average prices:
A pack of TEN cigarettes is AUD$22.00 3.8 liters of milk (a gallon) is AUD$5.54Domestic bottle of beer AUD$6.00Eggs (12) AUD$4.64Pair of Levis AUD$101.501 bedroom apartment AUD$1,234.00
Minimum wage was meant for high school kids working their summers, not for the adults tossed out of high paying jobs sent overseas.Raise all boats, raise the minimum wage.
When restaurant workers can’t afford to eat where they work, there is a problem! I read where one Chick-Fil-A owner pays his staff $11/hr and is going to pay them for NOT working while his building is being remodeled. He says he is doing fine.
The increased payroll taxes from raising the minimum wage will be paid by employee and small business owner alike. It is better to expand the EITC for lower wage earners. This will avoid harming the small business owner and get the money where it needs to go.
Clearly the only way to solve the problem of poverty and the decline in middle class wages is to create opportunity. You can’t “Fire” them all. We need R & D, a modern infrastructure, a tax code that isn’t riddled with special interest provisions, and the opportunity for all to get a really good education. We also need to have the patience to do this over the long run and help make all of our citizens and immigrants productive, happy, tax paying citizens who are able to contribute to making America great again.
…and we can apparently afford to pay welfare and food stamps for people working at Walmart, but we can’t afford to make Walmart pay them a living wage. Raising the minimum wage SAVES taxpayer money. The first poster here is simply making up fake facts to match his or her world-view. The actual data shows that states with higher minimum wages generally have lower unemployment and lower numbers of people on public assistance.
It is MUCH more than raising the minimum wage. It is more about the broken, tacit agreement and drifting attitudes between employers and workers. Some large unions grew to big and became led by fat greed-heads. Large corporations (owners & shareholders of) wanted greater profits and fewer laws, and bolted this country. And to boot, our state and national legislators finally sold out completely, and allied themselves to the upper class. Meanwhile, we sit at home and watch TV.
All in all, a good post. Yes, we have allowed too many situations to spin out of control for the past 30 years, and there is no quick Band-Aid solution. Now, more than ever, we could use a legislature to lead us back toward a more equitable system. But, it must be US, as you state, to learn the issues, the candidate, and do the leading by VOTING out the old order and putting better people into Capitol Hill and the White House, (the Koch Bros. money be damned!).
I just caught the anti-choice rhetoric of your rant, and I gotta say – you must be a man. Yes, only a man could assume 9 months of labor and the act of delivery is no big deal and that all unwanted pregnancies should go to term so that some other couple can love the baby. Clearly you’ve never gone through pain of miscarriage, the HUGE emotional drain of adoption on the mother that’s carried the baby for 9 months, and the dangers (yes there are still dangers) of giving birth. To you, as well as all conservative Christians, it’s “just have the baby, dammit”, as if pregnancy and birth are easy.

How on earth are the CEOs supposed to pay for fuel for their yachts and private jets if they have to pay minimum wages?
