One reason I’m glad our family takes off our shoes shortly after we get in the house. Socks on the coffee table are much better than shoes - they don’t tend to take the finish off, or have as nasty stuff on the bottom.
nighthawks - My Dad died almost 8 years before my Mom, and they were marred for 58 years. It was a non-abusive, loving marriage, but she didn’t mourn much for him. Many times she mentioned how nice it was to be able to set her own schedule, cook what she wanted, etc. The only time she said she missed him was when there was an ice storm and the power was out for days. She said she could have used his warmth in bed then. Opal doesn’t strike me as the type who will mourn much when Earl passes on - not all widows are the weeping type.
Rmom, my grandmother was like that when my grandfather died. I found out much later that she was hiding her grief from everyone because she thought we wanted her to be so strong.
Opal is insufferable. Earl is either a saint, or he is just waiting to die. He gets her back, but never to her face the way she gets him. When he gets back at her, it’s always funnier and better than when she goes after him. That’s his only consolation. Poor Earl.
It’s the way most old couples have lived, I know, but poor Earl. Who doesn’t like the guy?
