We usually called the school. Someone would be there to tell us school was cancelled. I always felt sorry for that person since they had to come in just to answer phones.
Not praying hard enough.. girly pleases are not nearly as effective as grunts and grimaces.. expressions like when you are passing a hard stool have been shown to effective.

Nowadays the school texts you when they decide to close, so this ritual has become outdated.
