I really don’t see the antipathy of conservatives towards Greece. The parallel in America is red states like Alabama and Mississippi, with lousy jobs, weak unions, and lousy incomes resulting in lots of poor people needing support and low tax collection. They rely on richer blue states like New York, California, and Connecticut to support them with Federal dollars; especially when they have crises like hurricanes or Texas’ Savings and Loan crisis. You would think there would be some empathy.
It is interesting that the richer states spend as much as 4% of their GDP supporting states like Mississippi. Greece only receives less than a percent of the EU’s GDP. If the conservatives didn’t depend on those southern states for votes they would likely impose an austerity program on them.

Far from being used and abused, Greece gets bailed out every couple of years, and they have grown accustomed to it. For those who criticize Germany on this point, why don’t you bet YOUR money that the Greek government will get its act together this time?

Blue state Democrats wrote most of the tax laws over the past decades. Go figure their arithmetic would screw over their own constituents.
