Ted Rall for July 02, 2015
Transcript:
Supreme Court justice Antonin scalia literally has the power of life and death. Is he mentally qualified? (Man: "Cruel and Unusual"? Capital punishment is cool and dandy! Stay denied!) Is his dissent to the decision that ok'd gay marriage, he urged: "Ask the nearest hippie.") Hippies went extinct in the 1970s. How can we explain Scalia's 40-year-old cultural references? (Woman: Clearly, he's never been outside.) (Man: Acid flashback? Senility? Did he mean "hipster"?) I'd turn to science... (Spock: I suspect a temporal paradox or a transporter malfunction.) ...but he won't.

Why would Scalia use science? He’s got antediluvian right wing cliches.

“Argey-bargey”, “Applesauce”: all hallowed legal terms. What Scalia means is “I may not know the law, but I know what I like.”

Hippies didn’t go extinct. We of the counter-culture became part of the common culture.

sorry mr. rall, hippies didn’t die out, they morphed into speed freaks.

You need to work on your Scalia, though. Put on some weight and attitude. . .

Anyone in the Chicago area who thinks hippies are extinct should drop by Soldier Field the next three nights. You’ll see thousands.

Au contraire! We are everywhere. We have a lot of the same values as the ones in the ’60s but, as a group, we are more realistic and discreet.

I have seen a number of recent interviews with Scalia and have become concerned about his mental state. In one C-Span interview he was actually asked if he thinks he might be losing some of his intellectual capacity (he’s 80 years old) and he laughed and said if he thought he was he would resign. Yet a minute later he defended his record on campaign finance reform (Citizen’s United) saying it was all good because although limits had been raised everything had to be publicly disclosed, apparently unaware that the new rules did allow dark money to “unaffiliated” PACs.
And his recent written decisions have been very snarky and openly question the intellect of his fellow justices. This trend is relatively new and one has to wonder if it is a sign of “grumpy old man syndrome.” I personally think he is losing his grip and would not be surprised if he really embarrasses himself before retirement (medically forced or voluntary).
Given the trend to appoint ever younger justices to a life long term (in order to preserve a President’s legacy) I think it is time to put a 25 year term limit on all Supreme Court justices.

Oh Ted, that’s complete jiggery-pokery, whatever the F that means!

@ArghhgarrrI couldn’t agree more. Too many Heads are narrow minded party animals. It’s some, nowhere near to all. In a crowd of 65,000 there will be a couple thousand.

Star Trek is science?

Star Trek is science?? Where has Ted Rall been since the seventies, or the sixties for that matter? Gay marriage dates all the way back to about 2012 when Obama opposed it. Freedom of speech and religion however dates back to the Founding Fathers.
