Sad to see. When I visited D.C. In the early 90s, the Metro was a fine example of a subway system, especially after having used NYC’s subway many years earlier. When I worked in D.C. in 2008, it was notable mainly for being massively overcrowded. Now, it’s apparently falling apart.

Escalators can’t be “out of service”. They just turn into stairs.

Escalators are “out of service” when they have a safety barricade in front of them—usually due to stair treads being removed for repair work.
