Hmm lets see now they deregulated airlines and service increased as did profits. They regulate passenger rail service and it fails. Oh yeah regulations work so well.
Accidents happen, IF there is criminal liability then prosecute other than that ,clean it up, pay the fines and get on with it.
Deregulated airlines increased their service?
Like now you MIGHT be able to buy a sandwich on the plane, instead of being served a meal? Or how checked luggage and now even carry-ons are being charged for?
Adam Smith’s ‘Invisible Hand’ works, but it’s still “Nature, red in tooth and claw”.
Erm, it isn’t a blame cartoon, it’s a solidarity cartoon. It is a cartoon sympathetic to the plight of the Americans facing this disaster, as represented by your national bird.
Railroads were DEregulated in the U.S., with freight companies taking priority over passenger rail- and they let the roadbeds go to pot, or pulled them out, thousands of miles of them. Amtrak was pushed to the side, not given any rational space to operate.
Before de-regulation, I used to drive the two miles to my local airport, get on a plane, and start my trip to the east coast. Today, I drive FOUR HOURS to an airport that connects me to the “system”. I could drive only two hours, but add 10 hours to my trip time, and pay more just to get to Portland (within my state, which is the trick), than to fly from Portland to New York. To get from Orlando to Little Rock, I have to fly first to Dallas, then back over the same route with a minor diversion to Little Rock.
“Hubs” have greatly increased costs, reduced efficiencies, and made air travel a literal pain in the buttocks. Now that fuel prices are up, and the number of airframes reduced to fill routes, things will only get worse.
How many airlines went bankrupt under regulation? Well basically none. How about flying Pan Am, TWA, and those other “little guys”? Well the little guys are gone too, and it’s now called “monopoly”.

NO blame here. Only showing that we’re in the soup now. Blame it on deregulation and big oil.

The “free market” is both a myth and a joke.
