Cats, as recent research shows, became domesticated much later than dogs. A lot of their charm is that they have not had time to evolve dog-like complete identification with and dependence on humans. Essentially, there hasn’t been time to lose much of the wildness. So they often have conflicting impulses, like scratch my belly -- until it triggers a defense reaction and I attack your hand. Or, as above, I appreciate the gesture -- and now I feel surrounded.

The advantage of cats is that you can fill the food bowl and clean the litterbox and leave for a week – nearly self-sufficient. Dogs are more like 2 year old children, truly affectionate but wholly dependent and in need of near constant attention.

Sometimes, Bob, you just gotta let your friends grieve their own way. Apparently, Izzy just wants to be alone right now.
