Prison food is nearly inedible. I found out. I was just a visitor who was offered a meal. I declined to eat it.

As much as I think that the more we reduce our consumption of animal products the better off we’ll be on a whole host of fronts, PETA’s praise of prisoner brutalizer, racial profiler, and all-around unpleasant human being Joe Arpaio is completely wrong-headed. Arpaio’s biggest reasons for imposing these vegetarian meals has nothing to do with animal welfare; in fact, what he’s really touting are the cost savings. And hey, if you can couple cost savings with serving prisoners healthier meals, then what’s not to like, right? Unfortunately:

“During a 2013 visit of the food factory after the meals switched over to an all-vegetarian diet, a Fox News affiliate reporter commented that the carrots in the stew were brown and that the soy looked like ‘wood chips.’ Arpaio responded, ‘Oh, that’s probably just dirt. Don’t worry about that.’ Inmates previously called the meals that they were served ‘slop.’ According to a 2013 Time article, inmates have to pay for their own meals. And inmates are served two meals per day, rather than three.”

Oh, and for those who think, well, at least the sheriff’s saving taxpayers $200,000 per year, keep this in mind:

“Despite Arpaio’s assurance that he’s saving taxpayer money with the meat-free meals, taxpayers still have to help pay at least $21.9 million to implement changes recommended by a court order to combat his department’s systemic racial profiling of Latinos. Those changes include improving training and technology equipment, to show that the sheriff’s office will no longer systemically single out Latinos during traffic and immigration stops.”

Associating with Arpaio is yet another stain on PETA’s tone-deaf, not-so-stellar reputation.

I’ll eat an extra burger today at lunch in the name of sweet freedom! Those whiny PETA idiots don’t know what they’re missing, and those prisoners do!

They’re in prison because they put themselves there. Worry about their victims instead of the criminals for once.

It’s that way in all for profit american prisons. They make prisoners work for pennies in unsafe, toxic environments and make a fortune off of their labor. America has the most barbaric justice system in the world right now. So sad that we let it slip away from us like this.

Nothing’s “slipped” away from us; its deliberately been taken to further enrich the already obscenely wealthy. Arpaio is just one of their better tools. Fittingly, Autocorrect changes his name to “Sepsis”.

In the UK they write articles about the barbaric prison system in Arizona.

In the US they write articles about the barbaric prison system in Arizona (and other places in this great country of ours).

Oh yes indiethink, the comic strip you love to cry about looks like a little kid drew it, so it must not be so scary after all, right? Also, a native suggested we all raise our fists in the air as a show of solidarity. No one, esp a cowardly troll like you can put down the amazing time we had in Pine Ridge. If you were half the warrior you think you are, you’d go yourself to help. They need it. They are a beautiful people, you might learn kindness and decency from them. HOKA HEY!
