LA too is a sanctuary city >> parts of it resemble Tijuana …

In fact, LAPD is prohibited by Special Order 40 from inquiring about alien status or to cooperate with the Feds … .

I love it when righties throw hissy-fits don’t you?

First of all harley, ti’s the all star-game, not the world series that’s getting all the boycott talk. Let’s start with that.

Second, this cartoon has nothing to do with either one. Parra plays for the Arizona Diamondbacks, the local team.

Third, hey it’s you conservatives who’re so big on individual rights…and guess what? That also includes the right NOT to attend any sporting event you don’t want to , for whatever reason you want to. And also to urge others to do the same.

Fourth, the oppostition to this law, ( despite all the rightwing rhetoric of late ) is not, nor has it ever been about letting the illegals off the hook; it’s about the possiblity that folks who ARE citizens may find themselves in Dutch, coz they don’t have papers on them at the wrong moment..

Fifth, how about asking the EMPLOYERS of illegal aliens to show some papers?’ ( This new law does nothing of the kind. ) No, no…we can’t do that, can we? That would be (shudder!) GOVERNMENT interfering in the private sector.

And lastly….what slays me is that so many people in Arizona are surprised that this is happening. When AZ nixed the Martlin Luther King holiday, the Fiesta Bowl couldn’t attract good teams to save Western Civilization.

Bruce, the problem with the law is that it puts the law enforcement officer in charge of deciding that someone might be illegal. How do they determine this? It is a state, not an action. Answer: not described in the law, left up to the judgment of the law enforcement officer, which is not acceptable Constitutionally. The rest of the law is fine.

In a state like Arizona that has 400,000+ or so aliens, how do you decide who to check and charge? Do you want to tie up law enforcement officers, the courts, fill the jails, bog down the judicial system processing deportations? And then who does the work these people are doing? This problem goes far beyond normal law enforcement. These people come for jobs. I’m curious as to why employers do not have to “check the papers” for legal citizenship in all hirings. Seems to me there is a lot of closing a blind eye in the interests of employers and profits.

Again, as Bruce said, this allows law enforcement officers to determine citizenship AFTER a legal violation has occurred. You can get all conspiratorial if you want, but what’s the beef with pulling over a drunk driver and saying, “Hey, you’re not even supposed to be in this country!”

And I am tired of the “come here for jobs argument.” Some certainly do, and some certainly do not. Yes, let’s crack down on the hiring process that allows it, but the question is not about labor, it’s about a border and legality.

Is the objective to enforce citizenship or not? If legal citizenship is important, take the necessary steps to enforce the laws and stop the jerking around. A misdemeanour triggering a citizenship check is a cute and politically correct way of circumventing rights that in the end will solve nothing.
