Kids really will do that. It helps to have well defined expectations before going in. I have, though, on special occasions told them, “Order whatever you want.” And they do. It is okay to do that on occasion.
I took my daughters high school friends out for her birthday party. One ordered the biggest steak on the menu. I was tweaked but suppressed it. I later found her dad was negligent and that was her dinner for the week.
