Last time I received a snotty comment from the person at the register I gave her a lecture on customer relations and offered to speak to her supervisor. She backed down quickly. Hope it made a difference.
Whether or not the counter server is “adequately” paid most likely depends upon the state in which s/he lives and whether the position is considered a “tipped employee.” The Federal minimum wage for tipped employees (and minimum is what most of of those positions start at) is only $2.13/hour. Many states require do more though http://www.dol.gov/whd/state/tipped.htm
I wouldn’t tip this barista because she was flat-out rude. But most of the time with low-level service workers (regardless of whether the service is at a counter or otherwise), I figure they need the money more than I do, so I tip generously.
Counter staff is paid minimum wage while table or wait staff is paid well below that. These people rely on their tips. At the end of their shift, they have to claim 20% of their sales as tips to the government regardless of what they actually make.

Never understood leaving a tip for counter service. I try to tip well for table service, but if I’ve got to fetch my own food, why tip?

It’s not rational. The rationale behind it lacks thought.
