    I wonder when “Good Cop, Bad Cop” entered the vocabulary. It’s such a simple and effective technique that I figure it has to have been used for hundreds (if not thousands) of years. Did the Spanish Inquisition play “Good Cardinal, Bad Cardinal” with heretics?

    In Basic Training, the two Drill Sergeants in charge of my platoon had the “Good Cop, Bad Cop” dynamic down. Sgt. Smith was our buddy, and Sgt. Jones was a hardass. I might never have figured out that both were just playing roles except that, about halfway through training, they swapped…
