Looks to me like the teacher read the assignment incorrectly to Ruthie. All the words are spelled correctly, just one does not make sense in that sentence. Threes should be replaced with trees to make better sense to someone Ruthie’s age.
I had trouble with tests in school because I would often find two correct answers in multiple choice questions. They have now discovered that many tests in the fifties and sixties were poorly constructed and did have multiple correct choices!
