My Chloe was 4 months old, and just had discovered the stairs (there’s a door at the bottom so we’d previously kept her from them). I’d seen her go up and down a few times and was just relaxing when, as we went down, she decided halfway it would be easier to jump. Broke all 4 bones in her rear right leg, as if you broke the bones in your hand between where the thumb branches off and the fingers start. It meant surgery and a month in a doggy playpen or on a tight leash on the lawn after I carried her out. Shelties are active dogs, and she had a puppy’s energy. So when we put her down, on the grass, or I had her leashed and took her to the couch, she was wanting to play. She learned “sit”, “down”, “touch” (put nose on indicated item) and a few other tricks on the couch cushion that was her allowed play area (not ever being the “curl up with the human and sleep” type) while looking for an opportunity to get loose for a minute of running that scared us as we hoped the surgery wouldn’t be undone, especially as when she was coming out of anesthesia they noticed she stopped breathing, and while helping her with that her heart stopped for just a bit… Watching her run now is miraculous
