Tom: Why did you tell Jazmine that ridiculous story about "Jolly Jenkins"? Huey: It's no more ridiculous than any other Santa Claus story. As long as we're lying to kids, we might as well add some moral substance. Tom: Oh, Huey... Santa Claus isn't a lie... He's a myth... Santa Claus represents that special magic of this time of year. He embodies all of the joy and wonder of the season. He... He is the spirit of Christmas. Do you understand... Huey: I do now... You're a grown man who still believes in Santa Claus, scary. Tom: Now that is not what I said and you know it!! Stop trying to make me look silly, you little scrooge!

I didn’t realize till this re run (The first time i’ve read a lot of strips from “Because I know you don’t read the newspapers” in a while) how rocky Comic!Huey’s characterization could be and how the carton changed it for the better: While he’s a 4th grader, he very much comes off like a self righteous teenager who just learned how much the world sucks: They have the right ideas (The School System is very eurocentric and Jasmine shouldn’t be ashamed of her hair, Riley shoudlnt’ steal), and can be a voice of reason.. but incidents like this show that he’s also unecessarily cruel and very black and white in this thinking: your either doing what he thinks is right or your wrong and there’s no middle ground. It’s mostly shown with the DuBois as he tends to treat them like crap for the crime of not fitting his standard of how a black person should act, and being outright racist in how he tries to make jasmine pick between her parents instead of trying to encourage her to take pride in black culture and her hair. Ceasear was a needed counterballance to make this character work. That being sadi ti’s to MacGruder’s credit he clearly recognized these issues over time: Huey tones down the jasmine abuse as time goes on , Ceasers intro gives him someone on his level who can also call him out but isn’t above his own personality quirks, and in the series while Ceaser is sadly absent, Jasmine is firmly huey’s morality pet and Huey is far less judgmental.

We have 3 sons, and in each case we responded to all inquiries about Santa with “Santa Claus is the symbol of the spirit of giving.”

Yes, Huey, stop trying to make him look silly. Dude’s perfectly capable of doing that for himself.

He does have a point, however: Jolly Jenkins is no more ridiculous than any of the other yule season tales. So have at it, Huey.
