Children are resilient…take Lawrence, for example. His Mom has shown him the bright side of things, and he’s excited now rather than being depressed like Michael is. I think it Is harder for those left behind to deal with a special friend moving away… ;)
unfortunately, kids are self-centered. This is normal brain development (not the sin I was told it was growing up). So for Michael, it is all about him.
It’s not only the distance. One makes new friends,gets involved in new activities, and generally has changes in everyday life. None of these are conducive to maintaining old friendships. Lots of work is needed to reach that goal.
TO Howard the Duck: Michael is left behind without his best friend. Lawrence is excited about going off to new & exciting things. For Michael, this is devastating.
Have maintained a long-distance relationship for over 46 years with my best girlfriend from high school. I do most of the traveling home to visit, but totally worth it. 430 miles each way 2 or 3 times a year and many phone calls in-between.

The ones who stay behind lose one friend; the ones who leave lose all their friends. Did that too many times as a kid.

Yep. Because losing a friend isn’t remotely a thing to be sad about.
