Hmm. I don’t know where Heng stands as regards Singaporean censorship in his own society which is quite severe but nowhere near the level of the Chinese. It might explain why he possibly views the whole Google-China debacle as very minor compared to Sino-US relationship overall? And, as SF observed gleefully above me, portraying Hillary Clinton as he has might not go down very well.

Heng is a very right-wing cartoonist, but he seems to regard the Sino-US relation as so important that this particular issue should not be allowed to influence it. Presumably he is aware of the fact that Google seems to have no problem with censoring its search results in such countries as India, Thailand, Turkey, France, and Germany (http://preview.tinyurl.com/y986xfn ), which makes its reported outrage somewhat questionable. My own take is that this issue has been raised (note that Google conferred with Ms Clinton before going public) to distract attention from the US administration’s failure to adequately deal with really essential matters concerning domestic politics in the US - unemployment, bank regulation, health care, etc. We shall have to see how it pans out - the Chinese, of course, will deliver tit-for-tat, but I suspect that both parties will work to limit the damage caused….
