I figured him as a deserter from the start, but what were his reasons for walking into the most potentially deadly environment for an American soldier, alone, in the entire world?
Yep, years of cries from the right to “free him”, especially in Congress, and despite the “details”, have indeed flipped in the moment of his actual release. Trust Congress at large with secret negotiations? Now THAT would be totally nuts given the last six years of history.
There are, hopefully, other secret negotiations going on to make Afghanistan a safer place for our troops, as we LEAVE Afghanistan, preferably, totally, and tomorrow, but that isn’t realistic either.
The stock market is at record highs, the big three U.S. automakers are back up to higher sales than since 2007, factory production of durable goods is up, and while mechanization, or exported jobs, are keeping those figures high, the middle and “lower” economic classes haven’t gained percentage-wise anywhere near what the top 1% have. It ain’t just the GOP, many have lost their way, if not deserted per se.
The GOP does not believe in the American experiment. They deserted the very idea of governing. What’s funny is that climate change regulation would have been much more to their liking if they had agreed to come up with some ideas, but even talking to the President is now considered treason, so no talking allowed. The GOP is dying, let’s hope it goes fast enough to save the planet, and is replaced with a useful opposition that actually believes in America.
Like the Democrat plan of more government, more spending, and more regulation on poverty, social welfare, education, the environment, or anything else has actually worked. Seems to me that getting government out of these things will bring less of them since more government involvement has made more of them.
The War on Poverty was astonishingly successful. It reduced income inequality, boosted American productivity and social mobility, and brought any number of people from starvation and deprivation to being hardworking citizens. The GOP has stripped it down to the point where little is left, and only the rich get the benefits of American society. We once believed that helping all Americans helped all America. Some of us still do.

As to that little war on poverty in the U.S., the current GOP, deserted a long time ago, like when Reagan got elected; governor of California.
