    Simple Jay. Hard coded means it is not very flexible to change. Soft coded means every marketing rep can make suggestion to really screw up the package, before it gets locked down. Or known as a 101 ways to make buggy software.

    and by the way, hard coded would mean either in firmware, or that something is parametric but some parts can not be parametrized and can not be changed

    I had a boss that said something like this. I don’t remember exactly what it was, but it was equally idiotic. Using this comic’s example, I waved my hands around and said “Poof! Our software is now softer!” Needless to say, he didn’t appreciate my humor.
