I’m not fond of drones replacing people on the ground to observe and confirm targets, but a more responsible way of war, by far, than carpet bombing Afghanistan and Iraq, killing hundreds of thousands of “bystanders”.
It is only a matter of time until someone starts to bomb US cities with drones, and we will not have any leg to stand on in terms of moral outrage.
Drone warfare is no better than a letter bomb. It is a coward’s way to kill. I understand the argument about the fact that it keeps our troops safer, and I agree. But…….the less messy and more convenient we make warfare, the easier it is to justify. War should only be a final resort. “Come on out and fight like a man!”
I watched the video of B-52 raids on Afghanistan, yes, carpet bombing, just like I saw in ‘Nam, but instead of jungle blowing up, it was near-barren hillsides, mountaintops, and homes. Those who’ve never been under those bombs, or other weapons of war, talk big, “cluck, cluck, cluck”, said the chickenhawk.
Stipple, with the MIC, only that we COULD kill our enemies in the “cheapest way possible”, instead of the most expensive. One bullet: $8 for a .50 caliber. One Hellfire missile to do the same exact job: $68,000!!
What’s heroic about risking a bunch of young mens lives when going after a fundamentalist muslim, when you can take him out safely with a drone strike? This is not a Chuck Norris movie
donaldo: it IS an actual good point, as all the “superheroes”, like John Wayne, Scharzeneggar (“Commando”), and Chuck Norris in the movies, wouldn’t last fifteen seconds.Real war ain’t their thing, and reality ain’t nothing like their movies. And that IS the real problem in America, and makes the chickenhawk B.S. work on the public, as too many think those idiot films ARE real! Worst “war movie” ever btw, was “The Green Berets”. They screened us a preview at Ft. Benning when it came out, and we all laughed hilariously at how stupid the scenarios, and script were. The finale, with Wayne and the little kid watching the sun set from Da Nang, IN THE EAST, was especially fitting.
Special operations folks don’t go in guns blazing, they go in, do the job, and leave, with nobody knowing they were there, until they’re long gone. They can also do eyes on directing of those drones, and leave after the RIGHT TARGET has been taken out, reducing collateral damage.
