How strange that climbing Everest has reached this point. It used to be considered the supreme test of courage and endurance. Eventually, there might be an escalators built to the summit. Read this NGM article from 2012:.http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2013/06/125-everest-maxed-out/jenkins-text.I wonder if tourists will in the near future take vacations into Earth orbit as matter-of-factly as this? And then the Moon?
The popularity of “climbing” has changed the activity drastically. From mobs on Everest, to popular rock areas in the U.S. being overrun with “sport” climbers practicing gymnastics, to routes so full of bolts and permanent anchors, even novices can get themselves into trouble with greater ease, and frequency. Throw in BASE jumping, and the pileup of garbage, and bodies, is becoming a real pain to rescuers.
Mount McKinley is also over-climbed. Several years ago a friend went up there and it is pretty crowded. Not so many dead bodies, of course, but lots of trash and poop.
